We had a busy day July 1 at Cape Lookout National Seashore with sold out climbs much of the day, full ferries running every half hour, and dozens of boats anchored on the sound beach side. The 4th of July holiday weekend and beautiful sunny weather brought over visitors from all over the US and beyond.
My favorite picture of the day is this shot with the sun directly behind the lighthouse, the afternoon sun making a halo around the Diamond Lady. I squeezed in this quick video At the Top in between climbing groups.
The Lighthouse is open for climbing throughout the summer Wednesday-Sunday, with climbs every 15 minutes from 9:45 – 4:15, weather permitting. This year the 4th falls on a Tuesday, so normally we’d be closed, but the NPS plans to open the Lighthouse for climbing tomorrow to celebrate the holiday.
The lighthouse is weight-restricted at the top–we can only allow 10 people plus a ranger on the Gallery at a time, so we carefully coordinate climbers ascending and descending every 15 minutes. Therefore, we can only allow 40 climbers per hour. If you are headed over to the Cape and wish to climb, get your tickets early in the day. We are often sold out on summer days by mid-afternoon.
